Cara seems to dissolve at the words. Never in my life did I think that I’d be so eager to hear from a cop that I’d lunge for my phone when it was ringing, my voice breathless when I answered.

“Flannery?” Cara asks, and I nod. As I watch, she seems to deflate, sinking against the door frame and grabbing it for support. She’s wearing only a towel, and her hair is still wet.

“They think that they found something,” I tell her, and her eyes widen. “They’re not sure, of course, because it’s getting dark and there were dozens of people at the campground this weekend, but they think that they found something.”

I’m repeating myself, but I can’t stop. It’s almost impossible to think straight when I can’t seem to get a grip on my thoughts. They’re swirling through my head like moths, fluttering just out of reach, making it difficult for me to relay to Cara what the detective said.

“What did they find?” Her voice is breathless.

“It’s not for sure yet,” I say, “but they’ve been canvassing the campground and talking to all of the families who are still there. As soon as I talked to the rangers, they shut it all down, making sure that nobody left before they could be interviewed.”

She nods but doesn’t interrupt.

“But they think that there were some people at the campground who left before they sealed everything off. If that’s the case, then that might have been who took Laura.”

Cara steps forward, and I wrap my arms around her, pulling her close to me. “So they think that the man who took Laura already left the park.” She slumps against me, and I hold her up, putting my nose down to her hair to breathe her in. “If he already got out, there’s no way that we’ll ever be able to catch up with him.”

“I know, Cara,” I murmur. “And that’s something that the police are looking at. There are cameras at the campground, but it looks like they were all turned off all day today, for some reason.”

This makes her pull back from me, and I see a flash of anger in her eyes. It’s more emotion than she’s showed up until now. I’m actually glad to see her get upset.

“How did something like that happen? Who dropped the ball on that? I’ll kill them.” Gripping the top of her towel tightly, she steps back from me, her eyes locked on mine. “I’m serious, Michael. I want a name.”

“For what?” I reach out for her, but she jerks her body away so that my fingers only brush her arm. “What in the world would you do if you had the person’s name? Drive out to the campground, hunt them down, and hurt them?”

Cara swallows hard and drags her eyes from my face, but not before I see something written all over her. That’s exactly what she was planning. She’s honestly willing to go to the campground and hurt whoever didn’t make sure that the cameras were working.
